Honor 20 Pro Launched in UK, +70% Prime Day 2019 Performance

When Honor announced its new Honor 20 Pro in May, one of the confusing things was that despite the global launch being in the UK, the device wasn’t ready. Review samples were recalled, and uncharacteristically for the company, they couldn’t tell us when it would be ready. Part of this was down to how the US Commerce Department had listed Honor’s parent company, Huawei, on a trade blacklist that would require US companies to obtain licenses to work with them, which had knock on effects with Google and similar businesses. Fast forward a few months, and now the Honor 20 Pro is officially being released in the UK.

Honor Announces MagicBook Pro with 16.1-Inch Display

Honor has announced its new laptop featuring a rare 16.1-inch display with ultra-thin bezels. The MagicBook Pro notebook packs a quad-core processor from Intel as well as a discrete graphics chip from NVIDIA, yet it remains relatively compact and lightweight. Phison’s Next-Gen eSSD Controllers to Support Everspin’s STT-MRAM Caching

Phison and Everspin on Wednesday said that the former's upcoming controllers for enterprise-grade SSDs  would natively support the latter’s spin torque transfer MRAM (STT-MRAM) that will be used as a write buffer to enable a more effective I/O management. The new technology will allow makers of SSDs to improve I/O performance of their drives and enable power loss protection without usage of supercapacitors. The upcoming eSSD controllers from Phison will support Everspin’s 1 Gb STT-MRAM memory “to increase the reliability and performance” of next-gen server-grade SSDs. In particular, the companies say that STT-MRAM chips will enable SSD makers to more effectively manage I/O streams, which will enable for better latency determinism and therefore improve QoS. Intel Q2 FY 2019 Earnings Report: Datacenter Drop

Intel announced their earnings for the second quarter of their 2019 fiscal year. Overall, revenue dropped 3% year-over-year to $16.5 billion, with gross margins still below the 60% that Intel likes to maintain, but at 59.8%, the are improved significantly over last quarter’s 56.6%. Operating income for the quarter was down 12% to $4.6 billion, and net income down 17% to $4.2 billion. This resulted in earnings-per-share of $0.92, down 12% from a year ago. AMD’s Eight-Core Ryzen 7 2700X Now Available for $200

As a part of Prime Day deals at Amazon, AMD’s eight-core Ryzen 7 2700X processor is now available for $199.99, which is $129 off its original MSRP. This is the lowest price for this eight-core processor with an unlocked multiplier ever. AMD’s Ryzen 7 2700X is the company’s former flagship CPU that has eight cores with SMT, features a 16 MB L3 cache and runs at 3.7 GHz default clocks. The chip also has two DDR4-2933 memory channels and is compatible with modern AM4 motherboards that are available widely and at different price points. Since we are talking about AMD’s X-series processor, it also has the company’s Extended Frequency Range (XFR) feature for an added performance boost. Corsair Acquires Origin PC

Corsair on Wednesday said that it had acquired Origin PC, a well-known boutique PC maker from the USA. Origin PC will remain a separate brand from Corsair and will continue to offer custom gaming and workstation machines. From now on, Origin PC will start to offer more Corsair products inside its systems. Both Corsair and Origin PC are private companies, so the terms of the acquisition are not published. The only thing that Corsair announced today is that Origin PC would remain a separate brand and would continue to operate from its offices in Miami, Florida. After Corsair completes acquisition of Origin PC, Corsair will still continue to offer its Vengeance PC, Corsair One, and Corsair One Pro systems under its own brand. Obviously, both companies will continue to honor all existing warranties, purchases, and support obligations with their respective teams. Nintendo Announces New Version of Switch with Longer Battery Life

Nintendo has announced a new version of its Switch game console that features a considerably longer battery life than the first-generation model. The new console likely uses new components that feature a lower power consumption and therefore the gaming device can work for longer durations on one charge. The new Nintendo Switch console has the same features as the original one (handheld mode, tabletop mode, TV mode, Joy-Con controllers, etc.) and looks exactly the same too. The company does not disclose precise specifications of the unit, but only says it can work for 4.5 – 9 hours on one charge, up from 2.5 – 6.5 hours in case of the previous-gen model. Corsair has introduced its first 32 GB unbuffered DRAM modules along with 64 GB and 128 GB dual-channel memory kits for mainstream PC platforms based on AMD’s 400/500-series as well as Intel’s 300-series chipsets (and their successors). AMD Joins CXL Consortium: Playing in All The Interconnects

AMD's CTO, Mark Papermaster, has published a blog post this week said that AMD has joined the Compute Express Link (CXL) Consortium. The industry group is led by a set of nine industry giants such as Intel, Alibaba, Google, and Microsoft. The CXL 1.0 technology uses the PCIe 5.0 physical infrastructure to enable a coherent low-latency interconnect protocol that allows to share CPU and non-CPU resources efficiently and without using complex memory management. The announcement indicates that AMD now supports all of the current and upcoming high-speed interconnect protocols, including CCIX, Gen-Z, and OpenCAPI.

Nintendo has announced a new version of its Switch game console that only works in handheld mode, yet it is considerably more compact, comes at a lower price point, and works for a longer time on one charge. No, AMD Still Isn’t Enabling PCIe 4 On 300/400 Series Boards

Following this week’s launch of AMD’s new Ryzen 3000 series of processors, reports have once again begun circulating that PCIe 4 will be available on some existing 300 & 400 series boards. This comes despite AMD’s official statement last month that they would not be allowing the feature on older boards, as PCIe 4’s tighter signal integrity standards would have led to, at best, a highly fragmented market where some boards work, some boards don’t, and some boards may be outright marginal. At the time the company stated that the feature would be stripped from the AGESA that goes into the final Ryzen 3000 launch BIOSes for older boards. So, to get right to the heart of matters, I reached out to AMD PR this evening to find out what’s going on with PCIe 4 support. ASUS has released a new BIOS version 0601 for its ROG Dominus Extreme motherboard that ‘improves PCIe compatibility’ when using Intel’s latest Xeon W processors based on the Cascade Lake architecture. Apple has stopped to list its thin-and-light 12-inch MacBook notebook on its website. Since the company has not updated its most compact laptop for two years, the removal of the product from the website may indicate that the MacBook is gone for good, or Apple is prepping a new generation of the machine that will be released at a later date. AOC is a brand primarily known for its gaming, mainstream, stylish, and entry-level displays. Meanwhile, the company also has its 90-series monitors aimed at demanding professionals, offering color accuracy and other features appreciated by the target audience. Last week the company introduced its most advanced addition to the 90-series lineup: the U2790PQU display that combines a 10-bit 4K panel and a relatively low price.
