iBASE Unveils FWA8800: AMD EPYC Embedded-Based Network Appliance

Image
iBASE this week introduced one of the industry’s first rackmount network appliances running AMD’s EPYC Embedded processors. The FWA8800 1U features eight cores, up to 128 GB of DDR4 memory, and up to 32 GbE ports. The appliance is targeted at various high-density deployments. The iBASE FWA8800 is based on AMD EPYC Embedded 3201 SoC that integrates eight cores without SMT running at 1.5 – 3.1 GHz, and dissipating up to 30 W. The machine supports up to 64 GB of DDR4-2667 memory when UDIMMs are used, and up to 128 GB when RDIMMs are used. Meanwhile, since the system is powered by an EPYC chip, it naturally supports ECC, Secure Memory Encryption (SME), Secure Encrypted Virtualization (SEV) that protect data in DRAM using a dedicated AES-128 engine, and other RAS features that AMD has to offer with its Zen microarchitecture. In addition, the machine id equipped with a TPM 2.0 module. The FWA8800 from iBASE is outfitted with an Intel i210-AT Ethernet controller, a...

ASUS Shows Off ROG Dominus Extreme Motherboard For Xeon W-3175X 28-Core CPU

Image
On Monday Intel officially announced its new 28-core processor designed for extreme workstations, the Xeon W-3175X. The chip uses the company's high-end Xeon workstation/server sock, LGA3647, and as a result, new motherboards will be needed for the chip. To that end ASUS has officially announced what will be among the first boards to support the new platform, the ROG Dominus Extreme. As we noted when we covered the new Intel Xeon W-3175X 28-core processor on Monday, the ROG Dominus Extreme is advertised as having four full-length PCIe 3.0 slots, all of which have full x16 bandwidth available. This means users looking to create a cost-is-no-object and all-out gaming system can run up to four-way SLI and four CrossFire multi-graphics cards configurations, or other crazy setups involving numerous high-bandwidth cards. The area around the PCIe slots has a coating of armor which stretches across the majority of the bottom side of the board with a cooling fan integrated in...

Western Digital Unveils iNAND MC EU321: a UFS 2.1 Drive Based on 96L 3D NAND

Image
Western Digital has announced its new lineup of UFS 2.1-based embedded storage devices for smartphones, tablets, PCs, and other mobile applications. The new iNAND MC EU321 drives are based on the company’s 96-layer 3D NAND memory and offer performance comparable to that of entry-level SSDs. Western Digital’s iNAND MC EU321 embedded flash drives feature capacities between 32 GB and 256 GB, and are based around an in-house controller that supports a UFS 2.1 Gear3 2-lane interface. When it comes to performance, the EFDs are rated for up to 800 MB/s sequential read speed, up to 550 MB/s sequential write speed, and up to 50/52K random read/write IOPS, with these figures presumably including the impact of WD's proprietary iNAND SmartSLC 5.1 caching technology. The iNAND MC EU321 comes in a BGA package that measures by 11.5×13×1 mm, which is small enough for modern smartphones and tablets. Meanwhile, given capacities offered by the new flash drives, they c...
